Manila, Philippines, June 4, 2013 — Just two months after the launch of the highly acclaimed all-new Mazda6 2.5L SKYACTIV, the Mazda CX-5 AWD SPORT debuts in the Philippines and further strengthens the presence of Mazda product range with SKYACTIV technologies in the local market. This range-topping variant of the CX-5 compact-crossover lineup comes with a bigger engine, a newly developed all-wheel drivetrain, the fuel-saving i-stop system, and even more comfort, convenience, styling, and safety features.

More powerful but just as efficient: 2.5L SKYACTIV-G engine with i-STOP engine idling system
Propelling the CX-5 AWD Sport is the 2.5-liter SKYACTIV-G engine, with peak power and torque at 188ps (5,700rpm) and 250Nm (4,000rpm), respectively.
This in-line-four unit combines a ultra-high 13:1 compression ratio, a 4-2-1 exhaust layout, gasoline direct-injection, continuously variable sequential valve timing (dual S-VT) on the intake and exhaust, and various other advancement — 10% less weight, 30% less internal engine friction – to achieve 15% lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, and 15% more torque at low and midrange revs than the previous 2.5L MZR engine. Moreover, despite its advanced design, the SKYACTIV-G engine can run on regular RON91 unleaded gasoline without sacrificing engine performance.
Also boosting the CX-5 2.5L AWD SPORT’s fuel-economy figures is the Mazda’s i-STOP system, which idles the engine by switching off the powerplant automatically when the car comes to a complete stop. Then, the engine is quickly restarted via a “combustion start method” that relies mostly on optimum piston positioning and combustion power (instead of the starter motor) for faster restart times and less energy usage.
The best of everything: SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission
Engine power is transferred to the CX-5 2.5LAWD SPORT’s four wheels by SKYACTIV-Drive, which puts together all the advantages of conventional manual and automatic gearboxes, CVTs, and dual-clutch transmissions in a responsive but efficient six-speed automatic package.
Its torque converter with a full-range lock-up clutch (Full Range Direct Drive) enables an early lock-up between the engine and the transmission for a more direct driving feel and improves fuel economy. SKYACTIV-Drive is likewise very responsive to gas-pedal input, providing smooth, steady acceleration or quick bursts of speed as the situation demands.
A balanced stance: SKYACTIV-Body, SKYACTIV-Chassis, and All-Wheel Drive with precise slip detection
Mazda’s no-compromises approach to achieving both performance and efficiency continues with the CX-5 2.5L AWD SPORT’s body structure and underpinnings. The SKYACTIV-Body and the SKYACTIV-Chassis greatly benefit from the use of a new structural design, novel production methods, and a higher proportion of high-tensile steel. This results in a curb weight of just 1,586kg, as well as better rigidity for improved safety and driving dynamics.
In conjunction with the MacPherson-strut front, multilink-rear suspension, making the CX-5 AWD Sport more surefooted whether on paved or loose surfaces is an intelligent all-wheel drivetrain. This lightweight and front-biased setup delivers the optimum balance between power and economy with its precise slip detection system, which instantaneously switches to all-wheel-drive mode upon sensing a loss of grip on the rear wheels. By sending twist to the rear axle only when needed (the maximum front/rear torque split is an even 50/50), it is capable of returning fuel-consumption figures that can rival those of front-wheel-driven crossovers.
Top of the line: bolder looks and better features
Finally, the CX-5 AWD Sport lives up to its status as a range-topping variant with added exterior and interior styling elements, multimedia functionality, electronic aids, and safety systems.
Sprucing up the “KODO – Soul of Motion” design language are bi-xenon headlights with auto-on/off, auto-leveling, and adaptive front steering capabilities, bigger 19-inch alloy rims with 225/55 tires, and a sunroof. Inside, the eight-way power-adjustable driver seat makes it easier to find the best seating position, while leather upholstery and door trim add to the cabin’s premium sporty feel. In-car entertainment also gets another step up with a nine-speaker Bose audio system. Driver convenience and enjoyment is further enhanced with Bluetooth connectivity that has voice recognition capability.
Safety and security features carried over from the CX-5 2WD variants are dual front, side and curtain airbags; disc brakes with ABS and EBD; DSC and TCS; a tire-pressure monitoring system; and an immobilizer, burglar alarm and keyless entry. The CX-5 AWD Sport expands its arsenal of convenience features with Rear Vehicle Monitoring, which warns the driver of lane change if there are other vehicles in the CX-5’s rear blind spot; if the driver still activates the turn signals to change lanes, the system will give an audible reminder. Another helpful feature is the lane-departure warning, which will also sound a warning should the car veer off its marked lane at high speed. Rounding out the list of electronic aids are a reversing camera and parking sensors.
